Group Decision Making

What is group decision making?

Group decision making is an approach that gives every resident an opportunity to provide feedback on the matter at hand as part of identifying potential outcomes and/or solutions. Every opinion, perspective, feeling, thought, suggestion and idea is valuable. The housing worker facilitates the process to ensure all residents are included and a rational, fair and realistic decision.

Why is group decision making important?

It is important that all residents participate in the group decision making process because the decisions made affect everyone in the house. Each resident is responsible for their communal living environment and personal well-being. Decisions need to be made to determine how what is shared will be managed and maintained. It is critical that residents work together and with their Facilitative Housing Worker to make decisions regarding house meetings, house chores, house rules, a house fund, house interviews and other matters as they arise. When all residents are involved there is a greater likelihood that the decision process will lead to decisions that will work for the entire house and create a comfortable and peaceful place to live.
